Segmented bowls are among the most striking of turned forms, combining the art of pure shape and the art of decoration to create objects that fascinate the eye as much from ten inches away as from ten feet. These plans use staves, segmented and laminated rings, solid wood and veneers to add geometric patterns, accents, and embellishments to a wide variety of bowl shapes and sizes. Using no more than a bandsaw (except for the small bowl kits), a stationary sander (disc, belt, or combination) with an accurate miter guide, some clamps and a lathe, you'll be able to cut, fit, join and turn a whole collection of beautiful vessels, ranging from traditional native American seedpots to contemporary vases and open forms. Along the way, you'll learn the techniques you need to design, fit, assemble & turn your own segmented work, opening up a whole new branch of woodturning for your enjoyment.
Each plan includes a complete description of the bowl's construction, stock preparation, segment or stave construction, lamination procedures, and turning & finishing suggestions. An exploded view helps keep track of all the different layers, and a template helps you aim toward successful overall shape. Execution of each plan requires a bandsaw, sander, clamps, lathe and turning skills.
